However, they were starting to smell a bit, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide their body odor.

Do you know where the expression “Don’t throw the baby out with the Bath” came from?

In the 1500’s the family bath was a big tub filled with hot water. There was a strict order, the man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then the sons, then the women and finally the children. Last of all came the babies. The problem was that by this point the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it, especially a baby!

The expression “It’s raining cats and dogs” also came from the 1500s.
To get warm the families pets, the cats and dogs, lived in the roof as houses had thatched roofs of thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It an ideal warm place to live, but when it rained it became slippery, the animals would slip and fall off the roof. So it rained cats and dogs!

It is thought the Olympic Games they originated at Olympia in Greece around the 13th century BC and they were first recorded in 776BC.

There are several legends that exist in reference to the origins of the Olympic Games, these include the Hercules legend. In this, Hercules won a race at Olympia, which was a valley near the city of Elis. He then pronounced that the race should be re-run every four years. Another legend stated that Zeus founded the games after defeating his father, Cronus, in a battle to decide who controlled the world. Another suggests that the guardians of an infant Zeus held the first race.

However, it is more likely that the Olympic Games were originally a local religious festival until 884 BC, which the King of Elis then decided to turn into a festival for the whole ofGreece.

The Olympics were first and foremost a religious event in celebration of the Ancient Greek gods, in particular Zeus. There were other major Greek festivals such as the Pythian, the Nemean and the Isthmain, but by 572 BC the Olympics had become the most important. Athletic games however, were an important part of many Greek festivals, so the Olympics were no different in this respect.

The Olympics were held every four years. Each one marked the start of a four year period known as an Olympiad. The festival was reorganised to coincide with the start of this cycle, and 776 BC is considered as the start of the first Olympiad.

Guy Fawkes was born in York in 1570. He was born a Protestant, converted to Catholicism and enlisted in the Spanish army. He took the Spanish name “Guido” and served in the Spanish army. This gave him plenty of experience in handling gunpowder. He had also been away from England for some time and had the advantage of not being known inLondon.

Robert Catesby was the chief conspirator, born in 1573. His father, however, was one of the leaders of the Catholic cause, he was wealthy and well known within Catholic circles. His parents died in 1598 and it is widely believed that this drove him towards his fanatical views.

Thomas Winter was a cousin of Robert Catesby. He was sent by Catesby to speak to Constance of Castille in the Spanish Netherlands, to ask the Spanish to put pressure on King James to stop persecuting the Catholics inEngland. He returned with Guy Fawkes.

Thomas Percy was an accomplished swordsman who converted to Catholicism. He was angered by King James’ continued harsh treatment of Catholics and felt this as a personal betrayal by the king.

John Wright whose family were staunch Catholics and his mother had died in prison as a result of her religious beliefs. He was a distant cousin of Robert Catesby and went to school with Guy Fawkes in York. Along with Thomas Winter he introduced Guy to the plot.

There were many other conspirators involved in the plot who played minor roles. They included Francis Tresham, Ambrose Rockwood and Sir Everard Digby. They were rich men who joined the plot and provided financial backing. The other principal conspirators in the plot were John Winter, Christopher Wright, John Grant, Thomas Bates and Robert Keyes.

All the conspirators take part in our show the The Gunpowder Plot – Remember, Remember the 5th of November.

Dirty, tired, war weary soldiers from both sides climbed from their trenches to enter no-man’s-land and to meet one another, to share chocolate, to tell stories, even to play a game of football.

Our show Happy Christmas Tommy – The Christmas Miracle of 1914 is based on that extraordinary Christmas of 1914. Two days when the reality and futility of war were never so relevant.

As Christmas Eve drew nearer, there was a strangeness in the air. Much of the shooting stopped. There was much good-natured shouting to and fro across the lines, so much so that the Generals on both sides issued directives forbidding fraternisation. They were ignored. Slowly songs and Christmas carols began to drift across no mans land.

No one side began this miraculous event. Suddenly and spontaneously along the Western Front, troops began to arrange meetings with one another in no-man’s-land for Christmas day. Shouted greetings and even jokes merged with songs and Christmas carols.

Gradually with the light failing, silhouettes could be made out. Men from both sides were abandoning their posts and meeting their enemies face to face. Sweets and cigarettes were shared.

It is a story every child should take part in, an to do so and hear to of the songs from the show please go to http://educationalmusicals.com/happy-christmas-tommy/

She was 269 metres long by 28.2 metres wide, this is the length of 4 Boeing 747s placed end to end?

She was the second of three sister ships. The first was The RMS Olympic (also captained by Captain Smith of the Titanic for a time) and the third was The RMS Britannic, sunk in theAdriatic Sea during the First World War.

When she left on her maiden voyage she was only carrying 2,235 passengers and crew on board. This was because a coal strike had made travelling difficult, and which meant that many people had put off travelling until the strike was over. The Titanic could have been carrying 3,300 passengers and crew.

Those that missed the voyage were even luckier as the RMS Titanic had only twenty lifeboats. Fourteen were of standard design, capable of carrying 65 people each. Two were emergency cutters that could carry 40 people each, and four were collapsible lifeboats able to carry 47 people each. With every lifeboat used to full capacity this meant that they could only carry 1,178 people, 1057 people were destined to die, and this is the frightening bit, it was more lifeboats than were required, at the time, by law.

Some events, like the chariot races in later Ancient Greek Olympics, were held outside of the sacred area so women could watch them. Women also had their own festival, which was also held once every four years. It was called the Heraea Games in honour of Hera the wife of Zeus

A married lady, called Callipateira, sometimes called Kallipateira, was caught at the men’s Olympics. She had disguised herself as a gymnastic trainer to watch her son, but got so excited that her womanhood appeared. However she was allowed to go unpunished as her father, her brothers and her son had all been victorious at Olympia. However, a law was then passed that compelled all trainers to strip before entering the arena!

The reason why adult women not allowed to attend was because Olympia was a sacred area dedicated to Zeus and was therefore sacred for men. Unmarried women were allowed to attend, as it was thought that the Olympics were a good place for young maidens to meet their future husbands!

We guffaw at the panto dame, a man badly dressed up as a woman, who tells terrible jokes. We enjoy the hero, a pretty girl dressed as a boy, who regularly slaps her/his thigh. We chuckle at his innocent friend and swoon over the beautiful girl with whom our hero falls in love. We always take part by shouting “Oh no it isn’t” and “oh yes it is” and not forgetting “It’s behind you”.

Now those good folks at Educational Musicals would like to make this tradition even easier so that it can be performed by more of our schools, drama groups and even youth clubs.

They have published four “Potty Pantos” that are potted because they are only between 30 to 40 minutes long, and are “potty” as they have taken the traditional panto stories and given them a “potty” switch.

With the result that you have Aladdin’s Lump, a lump of old metal: Jack and His Big Stork, a big bird: Goldilocks and the Three Scares, monsters who like living in a mess: and Daring Dick, who is a rich not poor boy.

The writer, Anthony James, says: “I have written these Potty Pantos so that any group can produce a short, simple and fun pantomime, the jokes are corny and the songs great fun. They really are great little stand alone shows achievable by anyone. We have even included a simple art pack so that even the smallest group can make the scenery, costumes and props from recycled materials resulting in a scenic spectacle for everyone to watch.”

So to learn more and listen to two of the songs fom each show go to http://educationalmusicals.com/category/potty-pantos

‘Oh no we don’t…OH YES YOU DO’
